Your Guide to Sri Lankan Currency & Financial Travel Tips

Understanding the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR)

The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee, abbreviated as LKR. It is issued and regulated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Current Exchange Rates

Please note that exchange rates are constantly fluctuating. The rates below are for general guidance and are subject to change. We recommend checking a reliable source or with a local bank for the most up-to-date rates upon your arrival.

  • 1 US Dollar (USD) ≈ 300 LKR

  • 1 Euro (EUR) ≈ 347 LKR

  • 1 British Pound (GBP) ≈ 380 LKR

  • 1 Australian Dollar (AUD) ≈ 200 LKR

Sri Lankan Banknotes and Coins

The currency is colorful and rich with cultural designs, often featuring Sri Lankan fauna, heritage sites, and traditional art.

  • Banknotes: Commonly used banknotes are available in denominations of Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000, and Rs. 5,000. The smaller denominations are useful for everyday purchases at markets and local eateries.

  • Coins: Coins are primarily used for small transactions and are available in denominations of Re. 1, Rs. 2, Rs. 5, and Rs. 10. While cents technically exist, they are no longer in common circulation.

Travel Money Tips & Local Customs

Bargaining: An Art of the Markets

Bargaining is a common and expected practice in certain situations and is a fun part of the local experience.

  • Where to Bargain: You should bargain for prices at open-air markets, with street vendors, and when hiring services like tuk-tuks (unless they are metered).

  • Where Not to Bargain: Fixed prices are the standard in supermarkets, department stores, pharmacies, and most restaurants and cafes. Do not attempt to haggle in these places.

  • How to Bargain: Approach bargaining as a friendly negotiation, not a confrontation. Start with a polite smile, make a reasonable counter-offer (often a little lower than what you’re willing to pay), and be prepared to walk away if you can’t reach an agreement. A good-natured approach is always appreciated.

Where to Exchange Currency

  • At the Airport: You’ll find numerous bank branches and authorized money changers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). The rates are generally fair, and it’s a convenient way to get some local cash upon arrival.

  • Banks: The safest and most reliable place to exchange foreign currency is at one of the main banks. They offer competitive rates and are found in all major cities and tourist areas.

  • ATMs: ATMs are widely available across the island in towns and cities. Most accept major international cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), but it’s always wise to inform your bank of your travel plans beforehand.
